#ABOUT
After premiering in Rotterdam in 2019, the original FREE AT LAST has been performed in festivals and venues all over Europe. The captivating piece is motivated and inspired in particular by the myth of Zalongo, in which desperate women danced a final dance as they threw themselves and their children off a cliff to escape their conquerors. The two young, internationally acclaimed choreographers, Danae Dimitriadi and Dionysios Alamanos, carry that emotionally charged dance on the edge of the cliff to the stage, featuring original music. For the duo, questions such as ‘How does an act like the final dance leave its mark on history?’ and ‘what role do we, as recipients play in keeping such an act alive?’ played a key role in the creation of the performance.

Danae Dimitriadi and Dionysios Alamanos are two Greek artists who have collaborated since 2015. In that time, they have created four works together: ATMA, Free At Last, War Never Came and UNCIA, for which they were awarded the duo prize at the International Dance Festival in Cologne last May. Stories of tribes and untamed animals that could not adjust or endure become the canvas of Danae and Dionysios. In their works, the duo proposes harmonic relationships between nature and its living inhabitants, while the dreamlike atmosphere which surrounds their work takes the audience on a journey in space
and time to witness a conflict between chaos and order.
Danae & Dionysios also create works for professional dance schools and postgraduate programs of dance such as ‘Free Bodies’ in Barcelona, ‘EPDC’ in Burgos and ‘PERA GAU’ in Kyrenia, while giving workshops internationally. Additionally, Dionysios has been awarded as the ‘Best Young Dancer’ from the Young Choreographers Festival in Athens Greece, while Danae recently became a fellow of Artworks 2020, supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.
Free At Last premiered in June 2019, produced by Theater Rotterdam, with the support of Stichting Droom en Daad, RIDCC and Big Story Productions.Free At Last: Rerooted version will be presented for the first time at the Athens Festival 2021.
