DESCRIPTION
Elena Antoniou presents for the first time in Athens her durational performance "In Situ" during the 2019 program of the Athens Festival. After 81 hours of total duration of the performance so far, the performer will spend an additional 48 hours at the Grave Monument of the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus, from June 5 until June 13, 2019.
With her durational performance In Situ, dance and performance-artist Elena Antoniou attempts to create a living exhibit in the here and now of a museum. Placing the body on a pedestal, the performer redefines the relationship between the visitor/spectator and the work of art and time itself, creating new conditions of observing for museum visitors, given that the context and content of the event are continuously in flux as the piece unfolds. Through this performative gesture, the performer attempts to transform the human presence into a timeless work of art.
To date a total of 81 hours of the piece have been presented at the Cyprus Museum in Nicosia and the Archaeological Museum in Limassol, the Neues Museum in Berlin and the Rialto Theatre in Limassol.
